Social Skills

We are now screening candidates for our next groups' sessions.
We offer in-person groups for individuals in our region, and telehealth enabled groups are available for persons located throughout New York State.
Please note that due to current regulations, at this we can only serve persons with an Autism (F84.0) or related diagnosis. We hope that this will be different soon.

Our groups run IN PERSON at our office in Hempstead.

Registration

Sessions run mid-week in the late afternoon/evening (90 minutes).

PEERS® Social Skills Training Program for Adolescents (ages 12‑18):

The PEERS® Program for Adolescents is an evidence-based social skills intervention, developed by the UCLA PEERS® Clinic, for teens in the middle and high school who are interested in learning ways to make and keep friends.

Teens are taught important social skills and are given the opportunity to practice these skills in session and between sessions.

BIPS is pleased to provide the PEERS® program by certified PEERS® trainers for adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.

Topics of Instruction
• Appropriate conversational skills
• Using humor appropriately
• Electronic communication
• How to join online conversations
• Having good online get-togethers
• Changing a bad reputation
• Handling rejection, teasing & bullying

Parent Involvement
Parents are required to attend a separate group meeting at the same time and are taught how to coach their teens in making and keeping friends.

Parents will learn ways to help expand their teens social network and provide feedback through coaching during weekly socialization homework assignments.

Children's Friendship Training

For children ages 7-11. BIPS runs all our social skills groups at our office.

What is the friendship training program?
The friendship training program is an evidence-based social skills intervention for school-aged children. Children are taught important social skills such as learning ways to make and keep friends, and are given the opportunity to practice in session and between sessions.

How can I, as a parent, assist my child through the process?
Parents are required to attend separate group sessions at the same time. In these group meetings, parents are taught how to support their children in making and keeping friends.
